MIND HACK: An Exercise To Create Freedom Now Not “In The Future That Never Arrives”

Think Like Tucker be HERE and NOW

Why do we spend huge amounts of time and energy
training for life and preparing for life without ever doing
the thing we have been endlessly training to do?

Have you ever practiced an instrument (thinking you’ll play,
join a band, entertain friends) only to find you never performed
or did any of those things?

In business, I know many people who attend seminars, but books
and programs, perhaps even read them but then never build the business,
do the marketing, or make that breakthrough or change.

Have you been furiously saving or investing to have some future
enjoyment of life that might never happen?

I love to figure things out. It’s a part of how I’m built.

And, I am a keen observer of myself and other assorted
humans with our varied ways of living and viewing life.

I have had years of training, in a variety of situations
and from a variety of master for a variety of purposes.
This helps me to see things and to learn things.

But one thing that drives me “crazy” ( a little exaggeration
and poetic license here) is the guru who tells you what to
do to achieve some goal, desire, skill, or ability but
never tells you or helps you with the HOW.

So here we go. A thought experiment that might work for
you. That might get you to look at life in a new way and to
think about time, your skills, and how you live and enjoy life.

But first, a quote:

“We are very good at preparing to live, but not very good at living.
We know how to sacrifice ten years for a diploma and we are willing
to work very hard to get a job, a car, a house, and so on. But we have
difficulty remembering that we are alive in the present moment, the
only moment there is for us to be alive.” —Thich Nhat Hanh

Hmmmmmm. That does get one thinking.

So the same voice and the same words do not resonate with the same power
for each and every person. But this theme is echoed again and again by
people as different and diverse as his holiness the Dali Lama to lifestyle
design guru Tim Ferris (of The Four Hour Work Week Fame). The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich (Expanded and Updated) (Amazon affiliate link)

You’ve probably heard this before, thought about it, realized the power of the thought,
and even wanted to do something about it. To stop preparing, and to begin living life.

But, as is so often the case we learn something but not enough to do anything about
it. Life starts pushing in and we forget about the breakthrough, about being here and now
and we go back to planning for life rather than living it.

Heck, after a life threatening spinal cord injury I swore to myself that
life was too short, that I would never allow the mundane and the future to
deprive me of the now.

Yet, remembering that is a constant struggle. Life powerfully tries to
focus us on the past and the future. we are haunted by the past and
lured by planning for the future. It’s the nature of the beast.

But there are ways.

Here’s a couple of thought experiments (Mind Hacks) to get yourself to
really move toward change, and to be here and now, more often.

But remember, we make real choices to be here and now way less frequently
than any of us would care to admit. So start being happy with even modest
moments of clarity and the ability to act on them.

MIND HACK 1:

Step One: With paper and writing instrument in hand close yourself off
in a quite spot for something like 5 to 15 minutes.

Step Two: Ask yourself this Question – If I could do anything….really anything
that you wanted to right now, what would it be? write down all the answers.

Step Three: Ask yourself: If you could do anything for the next one to four months what would
you do? Write down the answers.

Step Four: On a separate piece of paper write down all of the reasons why
you FELT like you could not do that now.

THEN burn that paper (with your objections) or destroy it in a dramatic way.

MIND HACK 2

The body is the past
The Mind is the future
BREATH is the now.

To be really connected to the moment. To begin to be really present and to
start to realize that you can be living right now rather than just thinking about
the future or fretting about the past, all you have to do is breath.

To get this mind hack, just read the FOUR FOLD BREATH.

Enjoy and start living in balance, even as you savor the past and
plan for the future.
